Yorkshire Terrier training

Yorkies are generally very intelligent and energetic, but despite their obvious and proven intelligence they can be difficult to train. That is why it is important that you commence the training as early as possible and have a general idea of what you are doing. A little effort and research at this point will go a long way. You will be amazed at how obedient and smart this breed can be once properly trained.

Yorkies can be difficult at housebreaking, sometimes it takes them several weeks before they learn what area is designated for what activities. That is why you shouldn’t waste a moment and as soon you bring one home you should show your new puppy where it is expected to eat, where to sleep and where to go to potty. Introduce a routine; this will make the puppy get comfortable with the new surrounding and with a new master. Get the dog accustomed to your tone of voice and able to tell when you are pleased or displeased with its actions. At first just use short, monosyllabic words to communicate your instructions – yes, no, stop…

Don’t force the training, keep the sessions short. You don’t want to stress out your puppy or learn it to associate your voice and smell with unpleasant memories. Their boldness might make you think that they are able to withstand just about anything, but they are delicate creatures and should be treated as such. Once you notice that the puppy is comfortable in the new surroundings and that it enjoys the time it spends with you, then you can start making the training sessions longer.

When that first barrier is broken and after the dog is at least three months old, you can start with the more complex obedience training. Always remember one important rule: positive reinforcement is much stronger than negative, never hesitate to reward your dog when it acts according to your wishes. The more it grows to love you the more eager it will be to please you. You just need to spend enough time with it for the dog to start being able to understand the instructions you are trying to communicate.

Start with simpler commands such as “sit”, once you get the dog to understand that its reward depends on performing your instructions training will get much easier and much more productive, regardless of the specific command.

Lastly if you realize that you are not making the desired progress try reassessing your techniques, do some research and try to find out what is the problem with your approach. If that doesn’t yield results, you can always get a professional to train your dog, not only will you finally have a trained dog, you’ll also be able to observe the process, see what it was that you were doing wrong and have that knowledge when, someday, the time comes to train your new puppy.
